HOUSING: Build America Caucus Chairs Celebrate Historic, Pro-Growth Housing Package Becoming Law

WASHINGTON – Today, Build America Caucus Co-Chairs Josh Harder (CA-09) and Celeste Maloy (UT-02) celebrated the historic passage of the strongest pro-growth housing package in half a century. The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act became law over the weekend, which included key reforms the Caucus pushed for during bipartisan negotiations.

“Congress’ half-century streak of ignoring our growing housing crisis is at an end,” said Co-Chairs Harder and Maloy. “The months of negotiations were worth it - this package will lower costs, jumpstart new construction, and cut costly red tape. Most of all, this is a critical step towards proving government can still solve the kitchen table problems families feel every day. We look forward to keeping this bipartisan, pro-growth momentum going.” 

The Build America Caucus has been leading efforts to pass historic housing legislation for months:

• Housing Roundtable & NDAA – Last fall, the Caucus assembled a housing roundtable with experts from think tanks, homebuilders, and realtors to generate momentum for a housing deal, followed by the Caucus’ 30-member letter urging the package to be fast-tracked with must-pass legislation.
• Fixing Harmful Provisions – In April, the Caucus sounded the alarm on harmful build-to-rent provisions in the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act while outlining needed reforms, which were included in the House-amended version in May.
• Unanimous Caucus Passage – Since then, the Caucus helped pass the latest package in the House with unanimous support from Caucus members, sending the historic package and 27 of Caucus Members’ bills and policies to become law.

The bipartisan Build America Caucus began as a first-of-its-kind effort to advance federal pro-growth policies and has since grown into the number one workhorse hub in Congress. Capitalizing on yearslong growing momentum at the state and local level to address scarcity and red tape, the Caucus focuses on three major policy areas:

• Unleashing American energy through permitting and transmission reform.
• Making housing affordable by incentivizing states and cities to build more homes.
• Speeding up infrastructure projects by streamlining requirements and cutting red tape.
